FAQ

Humans are sensory beings. We constantly rely on information from our senses—sight, sound, touch, taste and smell—to help us understand and respond to the world around us. We also have internal sensory systems that monitor things like movement, balance, body position, hunger, thirst and physical discomfort. Together, these systems help keep us safe and support our wellbeing.

When we're feeling stressed, overwhelmed or anxious, our nervous system can become overstimulated. Sensory tools can help by providing calming sensory input that supports regulation and relaxation.

Dovetail Sensory products are designed to offer soothing sensory experiences such as deep pressure, body awareness and gentle rhythmic movement. These types of sensory input are similar to the comforting experiences many people receive as infants, such as being held, rocked or cuddled.

Teens and adults-especially those who are Autistic, ADHD, highly sensitive, or living with the effects of trauma-benefit deeply from regulating sensory input as sensory needs don’t disappear in adulthood.

However, neurotypical people can experience sensory and emotional overwhelm and would also benefit from regulating sensory input.

Sensory tools help teens & adults to..

1. Regulate overwhelm

Deep pressure, grounding textures, or rhythmic movement can reduce sensory overload and help calm the nervous system.

2. Improve focus and mental clarity

Fidgets, weighted items, and tactile tools can support concentration, especially in work or study environments.

3. Support trauma recovery

For those who’ve experienced trauma, certain sensory inputs can provide safety cues, soothe the body, and help reconnect with a sense of groundedness.

4. Enhance daily functioning

From managing busy environments to improving sleep, sensory strategies support routine, comfort, and independence.

5. Build self-understanding

Exploring sensory preferences helps adults recognise what helps them feel safe, calm, and regulated-and what doesn’t. This self-awareness can be transformative.

In short, yes.

For many adults, sensory tools can help create a sense of calm, reduce feelings of overwhelm and support emotional regulation, making it easier to navigate the demands and stresses of everyday life.

As an Occupational Therapist, I have seen the benefits of sensory strategies firsthand throughout both my personal life and my professional practice. While every person is different, I have worked with countless adults who have found that the right sensory tools can help them feel calmer, more grounded and better able to manage everyday challenges.

There is no right or wrong sensory tool, only what works for you.

Our selected collections have been curated to give you what we feel would be the most suitable options based on how you're feeling.

However, everybody's sensory profile is different and what works for one person may have a completely different outcome for someone else.
